Getting Started Without Getting Overwhelmed

Thinking about swapping out that tired old flooring for something sleeker, tougher, and easier to clean? You’re not alone. Vinyl plank flooring is one of the hottest choices for homeowners right now—and for good reason. It’s stylish, water-resistant, budget-friendly, and most importantly, DIY-friendly. But even though it’s a fairly straightforward project, having a little insider know-how can save you time, hassle, and more than a few swear words.

First thing’s first: clear the space completely. That means furniture, rugs, and anything else you don’t want getting in the way. Make sure your subfloor is clean and level—vinyl planks aren’t too forgiving with uneven surfaces. Once that’s sorted, take a moment to let your planks “acclimate” to the room. Just leave them in the space for 48 hours. This helps prevent expansion or shrinkage later on, especially in homes that get a lot of temperature swings.

Here’s your quick-start checklist before you lay your first plank:

  • ✅ Clear out the room and sweep thoroughly
  • ✅ Check the subfloor for dips or bumps
  • ✅ Let vinyl planks sit in the room for 48 hours
  • ✅ Gather your tools: spacers, utility knife, measuring tape, tapping block

Measure Twice, Cut Once

Now it’s game time. Start laying your first row along the longest wall, ideally one that’s most visible when you walk into the room. Use spacers around the edges to leave room for expansion. Most vinyl planks use a click-lock system, which makes installation way less intimidating than it sounds. Just angle, click, and tap into place. It’s kind of like a big puzzle—only this one ends in new floors, not frustration.

You’ll probably have to cut the last plank in each row. A simple utility knife will usually do the trick. Just score it a few times and snap it clean. For corners or odd shapes, a jigsaw or rotary tool will come in handy. Once all your planks are down, remove the spacers and install baseboards or quarter-round trim to hide the edges and give your floors that clean, pro-finished look.

Pro tips to remember as you install:

  • Stagger plank joints by at least 6 inches
  • Cut planks face-up to avoid chipping
  • Keep a damp cloth nearby to wipe up any dust or debris as you go
  • Don’t rush—take your time getting the first few rows straight
