Getting new floors is exciting—it can totally transform your space and give your home or business a fresh, polished look. But if you’ve never had floors professionally installed before, you might be wondering what the process looks like. How long will it take? What do you need to do beforehand? Will the installers move your furniture?
At Rug’it Cleaning, we’ve installed floors in all kinds of homes and properties, and we’ve heard every question under the sun. So, to keep you from stressing (and Googling mid-project), we’ve put together a simple guide to walk you through the process—start to finish.
Before Installation: Prep Like a Pro
First things first—preparation is key. Before our crew arrives, we recommend clearing out any furniture, decorations, and valuables from the installation area. Some clients choose to handle this themselves, while others arrange for movers. Either way, clearing the space makes the whole process quicker and cleaner.
Depending on the type of flooring being installed—laminate, vinyl plank, hardwood, or something else—our team might also need to remove old flooring, inspect the subfloor, or perform moisture testing. We’ll let you know what to expect in advance so there are no surprises. If you’re replacing carpet or upgrading damaged floors, this is when we’ll assess and take care of the removal.
In short: the more prep that happens upfront, the smoother the job goes. That’s a win for everyone.
During Installation: Here’s What’s Happening Behind the Scenes
Once your space is cleared and the floor is prepped, installation begins. Our crew will arrive on time, go over the plan with you, and then get to work. Every job is different, but here’s what typically happens:
- Subfloor inspection and prep: We’ll level and clean the surface to ensure the new floor lays flat and lasts.
- Layout and fitting: Our team maps out the room to avoid awkward cuts and wasted material.
- Installation: Planks, tiles, or sheets are installed methodically, with attention to detail and alignment.
- Finishing touches: We handle transitions, baseboards (if needed), and cleanup so the area is move-in ready.
Depending on the square footage, most standard installations take a day or two. Larger or more complex jobs might take longer—but we’ll keep you in the loop every step of the way.
After Installation: Care Tips to Keep It Looking Fresh
Once the floor is in, you’ll want to keep it looking like new. We’ll walk you through the best care instructions for your specific material—whether that’s avoiding moisture on certain planks or using felt pads under furniture.
It’s also smart to wait at least 24 hours before placing heavy furniture back on the floor (especially with glue-down installations). This gives everything time to fully settle.
